GIANT OTTER PROJECT

The partnership between Jaguar ID Project and Giant Otter Project investigates interactions between jaguars and giant otters in the Pantanal, where overlapping habitats create complex ecological dynamics. Using a One Health approach, it explores behavioral interactions, spatial use, and potential disease transmission in the context of environmental and human pressures.

Data are collected through field observations, camera traps, and citizen science contributions, documenting interactions ranging from avoidance to predation. The study also includes non-invasive health monitoring through fecal and environmental sampling, with molecular analyses used to assess viral diversity.

Preliminary results suggest shifts in ecological patterns, including potential changes in jaguar diet linked to drought, fire, and habitat transformation.

Conducted in collaboration with the University of São Paulo, Projeto Ariranhas, Jaguar ID Project, and Instituto Federal Farroupilha, this research supports conservation planning, policy development, and sustainable management in the Pantanal.
